The Wilton Candy Kitchen invited elementary students to learn about local history while enjoying ice cream and stories from the shop's owners.

WILTON, Iowa (WQAQ) -A historic candy shop is celebrating the end of the the school year and America's 250th, WQAD reports.
The Wilton Candy Kitchen invited elementary students to learn about local history while enjoying ice cream and stories from the shop's owners.
Owners Lynn and Brenda Ochiltree say the candy shop has local and American history,
being in operation for 166 years.
"It's almost like a step back in time," Brenda said.
Sharing sweet stories with students has been part of the shop for years. The couple has hosted local elementary students since they took over the shop from its original owners in 2015.
"We want kids to realize that history is important, where you come from is important, and the things in your own town are important, and if you can know that and live that way, it's just a good way to be," Brenda said.
The tradition started with the shop's first owners, Gus and Thelma Nopoulo, and one class from Wilton Elementary.
The Ochiltrees hope that their efforts bring the shop's history to future generations.
